What Does God Say About Homosexuality?

We believe the bible is the inspired and inerrant Word of God, and the ultimate authority for Christian faith and practice.  Because of this, we have no option but to base our belief concerning any given topic - including homosexuality - upon our understanding of God’s Holy Word.  There are at least 7 bible passages that speak directly to the topic of homosexuality, and we believe these passages very clearly reveal that homosexuality is inconsistent with God’s design and purposes for human sexuality.  (Genesis 19:5-7; Leviticus 18:22; Leviticus 20:13; Romans 1:26-27; I Corinthians 6:9-10; I Timothy 1:9-10; Jude 1:7)  With this being said, there are at least two other very important thoughts to share.

First, homosexuality is no better or no worse than any other form of sexual sin or brokenness – be it heterosexual or homosexual. For many years, the founder and director of The Power of Purity – Tony Ingrassia – although heterosexual, had his own sexual addiction and practiced his sexual gift in many ways that were completely inconsistent with God’s will and plan for his life.  This included lust, compulsive masturbation, pornography, fornication, strip clubs, and adultery.  These things were wrong for Tony to do, because in the bible God says they are wrong.  Tony only began to find God’s healing for his broken sexuality and life as he considered what God – the Creator and final authority on human sexuality - had to say about sex, and then sought to bring his life and sexual practice into submission to the revealed will of God.  In much the same way, all we can do is encourage any person - either heterosexual or homosexual - to evaluate their sexual behavior as honestly as they can against what God says about sex in the bible, and then to consider the possibility of bringing their sexual expression into compliance with the revealed will of God.

The second thought concerns the matter of love.  In making this statement regarding homosexuality, we have no anger or contempt for any homosexual person.  We believe God is love, that God loves every person, and that we are also called to love every person as followers of Christ. Please know it is not our heart or intention to anger or hurt any person by this statement, but to simply and lovingly convey, as clearly as we can, our understanding of what God has to say about sex.  If you’re a person – either heterosexual or homosexual – who senses the need to experience your sexual gift in a healthier way, you are welcome and will be warmly greeted at The Power of Purity.  God help us all.
